One tenant of green building is to build to last. The home pictured above includes 50 year asphalt shingles, James Hardie® Lap Siding, natural cedar shakes, and tumbled brick piers for a timeless and durable look. On the interior, we use solid wood cabinets, locally milled trim, and solid five panel doors to resemble cottage classics. The finished floor is raised over three feet above grade. A popular tenant of green building is energy efficiency because that helps save money over time. Living in an energy efficient home will help to reduce the overall cost of ownership of the home. The ceilings have sprayed in place foam insulation and the walls have cellulose insulation, manufactured from recycled newspaper content. These premium insulation products provide for a very consistent R-Value throughout the wall and roof systems for better overall performance. Ensuring that there are no dead spots in wall cavities is imperative to eliminating opportunities for mold growth in the walls. This leads to another priority for Green Buildings: improve indoor air-quality. As another Healthy Home Upgrade, we install premium air filters in our air conditioning equipment to catch more of the dust particles floating in the air, keeping them out of the air you breathe as well as out of the coils of the air-handler to help provide longer life to the equipment. The home has been tested and certified by Florida Power and Light's BuildSmart program. Another principal of green building is site selection and management. We have been careful to save as many mature trees and shrubs as possible. The large trees provide both shade and a unique sense of time and place. The lots are within an established neighborhood, leveraging existing roads and utilities.
